A multidisciplinary program, the 18 credit-hour minor prepares students to function more effectively with abuse issues and problems in both professional and personal arenas. It provides a balanced orientation between theory and practice and does not emphasize any single method for dealing with the problems of substance abuse. The minor addresses varied aspects of effective service delivery such as prevention, community education, assessment, treatment, program management, evaluation, and rehabilitation. The course work may be applied to the educational requirements for the Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC) Credential.

Students who complete this degree pursue careers in family life education found throughout health care, religious, social service, military, and corporate settings. Post-Baccalaureate students new to CTE have the option of completing the requirements for Initial Teacher Certification as the first part of their master's degree. Required course work, developed from the published research body of knowledge of the professional areas, strengthens students' abilities to teach career and technical education and to develop and implement new programs and curricula at secondary and post-secondary levels. The coursework may be taken online when special arrangements are made to complete the hands-on components of the program at a school in the students’ locale.
